Our Roots

Jarrow Brewery was established in 2002 by long-standing publicans, CAMRA enthusiasts and husband and wife, Jess and Alison McConnell.

The journey began in 2001 when the fire damaged remains of The Robin Hood Public House in Jarrow, South Tyneside was purchased. The intention was to return the former coaching inn to its former glory and to utilise the storage space as a brewery.

With the pub relaunched, Jarrow Brewery commenced brewing real ale in October 2002.

The heady mix of high quality ingredients, handled with care and brewed with passion created ales that were enthusiastically received by real ale drinkers in the North East and recognition on a local and national stage followed.

The brewery gained early recognition winning five CAMRA Champion Beer of Festival Awards in its first year of brewing for Riley’s Army Bitter, Old Cornelius, Swinging Gibbet and Rivet Catcher.

In 2004, The Robin Hood was voted runner-up in the CAMRA Champion Pub of Britain.

The accolades for Rivet Catcher reached the national stage with silver and bronze medal awards at the Great British Beer Festival in 2005 and 2008.

As demand for Jarrow ales increased all brewing was transferred to an upgraded plant at the brewery’s other licensed premises in South Tyneside, The Maltings Brewery Tap in 2008.

In 2011 the brewery reached maximum output at The Maltings and the search for new, purpose-built premises began. In March 2013 the brewery acquired a new 40 barrel plant at Bede Industrial Estate in Jarrow to satisfy demand in its heartland of the North East and beyond.

The new brewery was officially opened in October 2013 by Stephen Hepburn, Labour MP as production began and in November 2013 Jarrow Brewery Ltd commenced trading.

Jarrow ales can be found in pubs, off licenses and specialist stockists with direct deliveries made by the brewery between Edinburgh and North Yorkshire.

Nationally, working alongside brewers, pub companies and wholesalers ensures that Jarrow’s beers can be sampled across the country as demand from further afield continues to grow.

Jarrow Brewery is an award-winning craft brewery based in the North East of England and our aim is:

To create great tasting beer.

Beers you'd walk a long, long way for.
